Following the success of the Speedmaster on the Moon, OMEGA looked to develop a line specialising in flight closer to home. The OMEGA Flightmaster was a unique line produced for a limited period especially for pilots and, while seemingly daunting at first glance with imposing dimensions and multiple complications, it was remarkably easy to read and surprisingly wearable despite its stature.
The case itself is a domed, sun brushed structure with a DC-8 super 61 jet proudly engraved on the case back. Around the edge sat four pushers, each coloured to indicate its purpose. The black pusher controlled the inner rotating bezel, the blue pusher could change the hour the GMT hand displayed and the two red and yellow pushers were the start/stop and reset for the chronograph. The hour, minute and chronograph hands could either be red to indicate the owner was an amateur pilot or replaced with cadmium yellow hands once one they turned professional, which remain visible under the infrared light of a cockpit.
In 1971 the Flightmaster’s design was improved to further aid pilots. Firstly, the 24-hour indicator was changed to a subsidiary second dial to allow a pilot to quickly see if their wristwatch was working and also, the glass was changed from domed to completely flat crystal. This model was therefore known as the Flightmaster 2nd Generation.
While only produced for a short period with 7,500 1st Generation wristwatches made and 20,000 2nd Generation wristwatches made, the OMEGA Flightmaster still captured the imagination. OMEGA later went on to produce a variety of wristwatches with the Flightmaster’s distinctive case such as the Speedmaster Mark III and the Spacemaster Z-33, securing this unusual exceptional wristwatch in horological history.
