Initially used to describe a Seamaster model with monocoque case (a case that cannot be opened from the back, but rather by removing the bezel and glass), the De Ville became a line of watches in its own right in 1967.
The monocoque case allowed designers to create a range of watches that were finer than their ‘older sister’ the Seamaster. Designers were also able to create a range that was far more expressive and experimental with a name that evoked sophistication and luxury.
