Notes

A ‘Chronometer’ is a timekeeper that has been independently tested for several days in different positions under a variety of temperatures. Previously under the supervision of world famous observatories such as Kew-Teddington (UK) Neuchatel or Geneva (Switzerland), it has subsequently been overseen by COSC; Contrôle Officiel Suisse des Chronomètres, the Official Swiss Chronometer Testing Institute since 1973.

For a timepiece gain the merit of ‘Chronometer’ it would once imply a competition between horologists behind closed doors for the conquest of precision. These awards and achievements were largely only ever seen written in newspapers and the fine timepieces that passed such tests kept locked away as a company’s closely guarded secret. However, as demand grew from customers for more accurate and ‘elite’ timekeepers, companies therefore began to bring timepieces with the title Chronometer into series production.

OMEGA had been producing pocket Chronometers since 1928 with the company finding that these high precision, elite timepieces were by far their most popular model. It would be in 1941 that OMEGA began series production of wrist Chronometers, spurred on by their recent success with the 30mm Calibre in 1938. This particular calibre won fame and recognition throughout the world for its accuracy and reliability during World War 2 where it aided thousands of RAF pilots.

OMEGA won a total of 93 victories in Chronometry competitions, 72 beings records and 1 being a world record in all categories achieved in 1936. The particular calibre that earned such acclaim was the 47.7mm calibre, achieving a total of 97.8 out of 100 points and was therefore chosen to represent the precision and talent of the Swiss watch industry in New York’s Universal Exhibition of 1939.
