Cartier broke with convention with the creation of the distinct, cubist style of the Tank models that went against the more fashionable rounded forms of the period. They furthered this pursuit of the unorthodox with the creation of the Obus, first released in 1923. A particularly rare model, its name means ‘artillery shell’ and is inspired by the surrealist and expressionist movements of the day following the end of World War 1 and the military pride that preceded it.
This model can be found in ‘The Cartier Collection: Timepieces’ written by François Chaille and Franco Cologni.
