Inspired by the flourishing cubist and modernist movements that had been swept into a fever by the fashions and intrigue of the latest modern war machines, the Cartier Tank owes its clean, robust design to the new Renault tanks travelling to the Western Front by American soldiers during World War 1.
Louis Cartier was so taken by their commanding presence and powerful, modern silhouette that he chose to create a wristwatch based upon it. This timepiece was presented to American General, John J. Pershing. The design was so successful that it didn’t take long to be produced for the general public and thus, the Cartier Tank was born.
The Cartier Tank L.C. (standing for Louis Cartier) was first produced in 1922 as a homage to the founder of the company. Its curved edges broke away from the cubist forms that the company had established in its earlier Tank creations.
