Ebel were founded in 1911 in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Neuchâtel, Switzerland by watchmaker Eugene Blum and his wife, Alice Levy. The name Ebel came from the use of their initials - 'Eugene Blum et Levy' and their brand slogan came to be 'Ebel, the Architects of Time.'

Ebel have won awards such as the “Diplôme Commémoratif de Grand Prix” in the “Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes” in Paris for its Haute Joaillerie Art Déco watch collection, made in platinum with onyx, baguette-cut diamonds and emeralds and, the Gold medal at the National Exhibition in Bern, Switzerland for a patented EBEL ring watch with hidden time-setting and lever escapement within the movement.

The company also produced watches exclusively for the British Royal Air Force from 1939 through 1945, during World War II.
