During the early 20th century Cartier drew upon inspirations from the growing popularity of Orientalism and the revolution of colour and exoticism which had been introduced by Ballet Russes and the Paris Opera. Contrasting colours set against a background of black and a curious use of shape and form drew upon Egyptian, Persian and Chinese influences.
The Cartier pocket watches of the time continued with their classic shape however, utilized such materials as onyx, jade, rock crystal and lapis lazuli in their construction to create a perfect harmony of cultural influence and archetypal form.
